More Students Passing California Exit Exam

August 24, 2010 (San Francisco)
– The San Francisco Unified School District

(SFUSD) saw a three percentage point gain in the pass rate for students who took and

passed the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). The district’s cumulative rate

for high school seniors, with more than the 230 credits necessary for graduation,

meeting the CAHSEE requirement in 2010 is approximately 95 percent (95%); the 2009

percentage was approximately 92 percent (92%).

Eighty percent (80%) of the 10th grade students from the class of 2012 who took the

CAHSEE for the first time passed either the English Language Arts or the Mathematics

section of the CAHSEE. This is an increase from 77 percent (77%) for the class of

2011. Students in nearly every subgroup are showing similar gains.

Students who pass the CAHSEE in 10th grade are more likely to graduate. Current law

specifies that all public high school students must take the CAHSEE for the first time in

grade ten. Students who do not pass the CAHSEE in grade ten will have two

opportunities in grade 11 and up to five opportunities in grade 12 to pass the exam.
