This post will focus on how to be more successful in test taking. Test taking is a part of school and some classes (college, high school, etc) will make the majority of your grade. Some people are natural test takers, however everyone can be successful in taking tests with some patience and hard work.
1. Preparation, Preparation, Preparation Keep up your class/homework. Most tests are based on the work completed in class. Some teachers even give open book tests. If you are absent it is your responsibility to get the work that you missed either by speaking to the teacher and/or a trusted classmate. Have all your supplies needed, ie. pencils, pens, calculators, etc. 2. Study a little bit everyday. Your teachers give you adequate time to study for an upcoming test. Do not wait until the last minute to cram, it adds unnecessary stress. 3. Read Everyday Reading is the basis for success in school and in life. Everything is based on reading. If you apply for a job, you have to be able to read the job application. 4. Follow Directions Before you begin the test read the instructions and make sure you understand what the test is asking you to do. If you do not understand the directions ask the teacher. 5. Make Educated Guesses If the test is a multiple choice and you do not know the answer, try to eliminate at least one wrong answer. Do not leave any blank answers. 6. Get a Good Night Sleep and Eat Breakfast and Lunch Come to class well rested, which will help you focus. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which will give you energy to get through the test and school. Lunch will help you avoid the late afternoon crash. 7. Come on Time If you are late it is difficult to regain focus and it is a distraction to your classmates. You will also have less time to work. 8. Turn off all electronics Cellphones and other electronics are not allowed at MLK; if your phone rings in class, it is against school policy, rude, and distracting to your classmates. 9. Relax Before you begin the test take a deep breath, relax, and focus. Just focus on doing your best. 10. Have a Book. If you finish early then you should have a quiet activity such as reading. This is not the time to talk to your friends. Everyone has the right to work in a quiet environment.
