Extenuating Circumstances

I am an immigrant from Russia.  I came to the US 3 years ago.  My family and I did not know any English.  In 6th grade I was struggling with English and did not do well in school. I wanted to give up because English was hard for me and I did not think I could learn and be successful in America.  However, my English teacher believed in me and helped me (by talking very slowly and adjusting my assignments) adjust to school in this country.  I decided I would work very hard and not give up. In 7th grade, my English improved and I have been a 4.0 student every quarter.

Demonstrated Ability to Overcome Hardship

I have been in this country for 4 years and I have maintained a 4.0 since 7th grade.  I did not know any English and could not understand anything.  However, I worked very hard and am successful.

My dad is a single parent.  He works very hard, cleaning offices at night, to support my 2 younger sisters and me.  I am the oldest and feel responsible to help my dad with housework and taking care of my sisters.  I also have to teach my father English so he can go back to school and get a better job to give us a better life.
