Welcome to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Midddle School  (MLK) Counseling Department website.  MLK believes that all students can learn and reach their potential.  The counseling department is here to help students and their families with academic, emotional, and behavioral support.  Students' safety, academic, and social needs are our number one priority. The counseling staff has more than 100 years combined experienced working in Colleges, High, Middle, and Elementary Schools in California and Out of State.  
Our duties include but are not limited to: 

Counseling and Advising Students (Group and Indvidual).
Identifying At-Risk Students
Hold Parent/Guardian Conferences  
Collaborate with School Staff
Review Transcripts and STAR test scores--emphasize the value and the importance in passing all classes, maintaining a high Grade Point Average, and how test scores effect class placement
Create a College Bound Culture
Post Honor Role List (by Principal's Office)
Create the D,F,U list
Organizing Student Success Team Meetings (SSTs)
Inform students of middle school promotional requirements and high school graduation requirements
(A-G requirements as of the Class 2014).
 
Teach valuable study skills
Stress the importance of a strong work ethic
Emphasize the value of education
Expose students about different careers
Notify families of their children's academic progress
Focus on preventative services (ie. conflict resolution, gang and violence prevention, Student Assistance Program (SAP), and tutoring)
Handle Crisis
Communicate with families regarding their children's academic, safety, emotional, social, and attendance issues 
Refer to Community Based Organizations (CBOs)
Make Home Visits
