Helpful Hints for Success for both Parents/Guardians and Students
Ms. Hurley passes this information out to all of the 6th graders at the beginning of the school year, but these hints are important to repeat. As MLK wants all students to succeed in Middle School and beyond. There is additional information as well.

Attire
School Uniform: MLK is a uniformed school.  The required uniform is white collared shirt, black pants/skirt, red sweater or class hoodie.  No sagging pants.  The shirt and pants/skirt can be purchased at Target, Walmart, The Gap, Old Navy, etc.  The red sweater can be purchased at Ruth's on San Bruno near the freeway.   If there are financial difficulties please see the counseling department or the administration.  All conversations will remain confidential.

PE Uniform: Red t shirt and Black shorts $20 each and is required.Every Friday you should take home your gym clothes to be washed and bring them back on Monday. Also in your gym locker you should leave deodarant for very hot days.  Optional items: Sweatpants $10 and hoodie is $25.  You can also wear your own sweat pants. Your gym lock is free but if it is lost or stolen you must pay $3 to replace it.

Studying/Doing Homework
Home Area: When doing your homework you should have a quiet and uncluttered area to work.  If space at home is an issue than you should stay after school with the afterschool program and complete your homework there.

School Materials: Teachers at the beginning of the school year provide a supply list that they require.  Students are responsible for  their backpacks, textbooks, notebooks, binders, paper, pens and pencils.  If a textbook is lost, stolen, or damaged you are responsible to pay for the book.

Reading: Everyone should read 20 minutes everyday.  If your STAR test scores are low then you should be reading out loud to your parents/guardians.  Then that person should ask you questions about what you read to improve your comprehension.

Public Library: All students should have a public library card.  There is a public library on the back of the MLK campus. Parents/Guardians should also have a library card and be reading as well, which is a model for your children.

Food/Sleep

Eat a Good Breakfast.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and provides you energy throughout the school day.  Many students either do not eat breakfast or eat chips.  MLK provides breakfast every morning or students can eat at home such as cereal, toast, fruit, juice, milk, etc.

Provide Lunch or Money: All students are to fill out a School District Lunch Form.  Ask your child what he/she ate for lunch many spend their lunch money buying chips and soda instead of having lunch.

Bedtime: Have your bedroom quiet, turn off the TV, Radio, Ipod and other electronics.  If you are having trouble sleeping reading is a helpful way to fall asleep.  Be in bed by 10 pm.  Most people need between 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

Alarm Clock: Set your alarm every night before you go to bed so you can arrive to school on time. 4 Tardies is an automatic Unsatisfactory Citizenship on the reportcard. For 8th Graders having excessive tardies may prohibit you from participating in the 8th Grade promotional activities (Trip, Dinner/Dance, and Promotion Ceremony). Wear a watch to be aware of the time so you are not late.

Grades
Report Cards: Report cards are mailed home every 6 weeks.  Please make sure MLK has the correct address on file so you will receive the report card.  Discuss your child's report card with him/her.  If the grades are low there is tutoring and you can request a meeting with your child's teachers.  Keep all of your child's report cards in a folder in one drawer where you can always locate them.

Tutoring: After School Program is from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.  The sign up form is in the main office.  Parent/Guardian signature must be on the After School application.  Ask your teachers when they can help you.

Attendance
You are expected to be in school and on time everyday.  If you are absent or late you must have a note explaining the reason for the absence signed by a Parent/Guardian, with child's full name, grade, homeroom, and a working phone number.

If you need to leave early, you must come to the counseling office at the beginning of school  to get a Permit to Leave (PTL) with a note signed by a Parent/Guardian explaining the reason for leaving early, your child's full name, grade, homeroom, and a working phone number.
